Where are they from?
The Swordtail originatated in the Atlantic slope rivers in Guatemala, Belize and Southeast Mexico. The farm bred fish today show little resemblance to their drab green wild caught cousins. They have been bred in Singapore and many parts of the world to develop a wide range of vivid colours.
How many can I keep?
Can be kept in groups. Best to keep one male to two females.
What are the ideal water conditions?
Ideal conditions are neutral to hard. All fish available are farm bred and will adapt to a wide range of water parameters.
What do you feed them?
They are omnivores and will eat a variety of foods. Feed a varied diet of frozen, freeze dried and flake foods.
How compatible is it with other fish?
A peaceful community fish. See tank mates.
How do you breed them?
Swordtails breed readily and produce between 40-80 live young. They are easy to sex as the adult male
has a sword like extension to its tail.
